Media Outlets and their role in Advocacy

The Arab World Center for Democratic Development and Human Rights, in partnership with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, held a two-days workshop in Irbid entitled: Media outlets and their role in advocacy. This workshop came within the policy of the UniHrd and the HSS in raising awareness and educating all segments of society on issues and topics that concern and affect their daily reality.

 

The trainer in the workshop, Mr. Riad Sobh, said that advocacy is a set of tactics directed towards decision makers to support and solve a specific issue. It aims to attract the attention of society and civil society organizations to a certain issue in order to bring about change.

Sobh added that advocacy is a set of coordinated and planned activities that take into account the general context, and are designed to persuade decision makers or people who can influence them, based on sound arguments and presented in a convincing manner aimed at influencing public policies or societal practices in order to understand rights or common needs and interests.

He also talked about the steps to gain support, including (the issue / goals / objectives / preparing the message / target audience / building support - alliances / communication channels / obtaining funding / implementation / data collection / follow-up and evaluation).

The workshop included a series of trainings and activities aimed through practical application to develop a case, conduct advocacy campaigns, and gain support for it in terms of goals, expectations, and needs, supporting bodies, expected results and others.

The participant from Ma’an Governorate, Amina Al-Hadban, said that during the two days she learned a lot of information that we will reflect on the ground, including how to gain support and how to win the community in favour of the issue or campaign, and how to address and solve it and what will benefit the community.

At the end of the workshop, the participants came out with a set of recommendations, including the importance of using advocacy to gain support for civil society institutions in order to enable them to influence government policies and decisions, and to circulate these workshops to all governorates of the Kingdom, support youth issues and provide financial support "financing".
