“Asylum in Jordan - Challenges of the Past, Present & Future”

Under the patronage of H.E Prime Minister Dr. Bisher Alkhasawneh, the international Conference “Asylum in Jordan - Challenges of the Past, Present & Future” has taken place at the University of Petra.

Within the celebrations of Jordan’s first centenary, an international conference on “Asylum in Jordan - Challenges of the Past, Present & Future” was held at the University of Petra from November 10-11 in collaboration with the Arab World Center for Democratic Development & Human Rights (UniHRD) and the HSS Amman Office.

“The conference comes within Jordan’s celebrations of the first centenary of the country, during which the loyal people of this country exerted a lot of effort, hardships, patience and faced many challenges. Humane asylum in Jordan is an issue that still attracts the attention of intellectuals and politicians.” said Prof. Marwan El-Muwalla, the president of Petra university.

The Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, Musa Al-Maaytah, indicated that Jordan hosts the second largest proportion of refugees in the world in relation to the number of citizens. He said "Jordan's stability and security contributed to hosting refugees, as Jordan hosts more than 4 million refugees who receive essential care and services, including health care, education and social services, which made Jordan an example to emulate in dealing with refugees. Despite the lack of resources, Jordan is still committed to protecting refugees in its response plan to the pandemic, as Jordan recently became one of the first countries in the world to give refugees vaccinations against Covid-19 for free.“

Al-Maaytah added that international aid in this regard is still below the required level and covers only a small percentage of the real cost borne by Jordan. He called on brotherly countries to stand by Jordan, as with all the challenges, the protection of refugees remains a global responsibility.

The participants also emphasized on the global mission of protecting refugees and lending them a helping hand out of humane consideration, and the need to look into the real causes of asylum such as civil wars, conflict and extremism and prevent them.
