Within the framework of the "Women in Dialogue"-Program (see previous article) each women group is asked to develop a small initiative to express their citizenship and to promote it among the community. The women group of Mughayer Sarhan Village carried out a social initiative on the theme of "Early Marriage".

Following several discussions in the women's group regarding cultural differences between Syrians and Jordanians, the women have decided to organize a community initiative addressing the early-marriage practices in their community.

The decision to go for this topic was evoked by the realization that some women in the group (especially Syrians) have been sent to marry as young as 13 years old... As a result, the women want to raise their fellow women's awareness on this issue to avoid such cases from happening in the future.

The event, which took place on April 4, 2016 was organized in a big tent in the yard of the host CBO (Sarhan Society for Family and Childhood Development). The women invited other women from the community to attend the event, so that in total the number of participants in this event have been around 40.

The women and the CBO have invited an expert from the 'Jordanian Association for Family Planning and Protection' (JAFPP) to conduct the awareness raising part of this event.

Furthermore the women shared their stories how they experienced the seminars and they encouraged other women to learn more about those topics.

The topics covered during 9 day-long seminars scattered over a period of one month include:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Conflict dialogue and conflict transformation
  • Community culture and community building
  • Women’s rights
  • Civic education and women’s participation in the political life
  • Active citizenship and community action
  • Basic life skills
