Climate Change - MENA Project
First Practitioner Workshop on "Climate Change Interactions and Impact on Protected Areas" in the framework of the MENA-Region Climate Change Project, April 22 - 29, 2016 in Ajloun / Jordan

In the framework of the MENA-Region project "Climate Change and Protected Areas" (see previous article) the first workshop for practitioner from all over the region took place in the "Royal Academy of Nature Conservation" in Ajloun.

The Hanns Seidel Stiftung is carrying out the three year project in cooperation with the 'Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature' (RSCN). This project is from utmost importance against the background of an increased impact of climate change on natural resources, biodiversity and human development.

The workshop is part of a series of the three workshops build on each other in order to improve the knowledge and management skills of executives and employees of institutions that are entrusted with the management of protected areas, in regard to increasing the resilience of protected areas and their role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

18 participants from 5 countries (Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia) took part who represent a wide range of environmental organizations and a wide range of job positions.

The content of the first workshop focused on the principles of climate science, climate change reality, the interactions and impact on biodiversity and protected areas and the relation and role of protected areas in mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

During the workshop for example the following aspects were addressed:

- the human impact on earth

- the difference between climate and weather

- the climate change history

- the climate reality and observations

- the future predictions

- the climate change impact

- the difference between mitigation and adaptation

- the definition of adaptation tools within the context of the different countries

- the consequences of climate change on natural resources and protected areas

- the role and importance of protected areas

- the threats facing protected areas and possible linkages with climate change.

- possible responses to combat the threats
