Opening Speech by H.E. Khalid Irani, President of RSCN

The Environmental Police Department was established on 15th June 2006. On 15th December 2008 it became the Royal Department for Environment Protection (RDEP). Being a unique institution in Jordan – and perhaps in the region - the Environmental Police is the executive arm of the Ministry of Environment (MoE). Administratively the Environmental Police is a unit of the Public Security Directorate (PSD). They act on directives from PSD and MoE. Their duty is to bring violator of environmental laws to the court and enforce court decisions.

In order to enforce wildlife and environmental protection laws, it is necessary to build continuously environmental capacities. Rangers from RSCN protected areas for example work hand in hand with the Environmental Police to bring violator of environmental laws to the court and enforce court decisions.

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) in cooperation with the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung (HSS) has developed a further education program consisting of 3 phases. The workshop series was opened by His Excellency Mr. Khalid Irani, President of RSCN, Major General Atef Al Saudi, Director-General of the Public Security Directorate, Mr. Yeyha Khaled, Director of RSCN and Mr. Thomas Gebhard, Resident Representative of HSS Amman during a ceremony in the Academy.

During the first workshop, which was conducted in the 'Royal Academy for Nature Conservation' in Ajloun, members the 'Environmental Police' were trained on topics like 'Principles of Biodiversity and Nature Conservation', 'Protected Areas and Reserves Concepts', 'Introduction to CITES', and others.
