Workshop on Lebanese women rights in comparison with other countries from June, 30 until July 1, 2017 in Byblos / Lebanon

The goal of the workshop was to identify the most important strategies that provide profit in the struggle to secure the rights of women and to develop a future plan for action on the ground.

Lebanese women are considered to have more rights and freedom compared to other women in the Arab world. Women in Lebanon are able to dress more liberally and move around with relative ease in certain parts of the country. However, due to the large number of officially recognized religions in Lebanon, Lebanese family matters are governed by at least 15 personal statue codes.

During the workshop members of civil society organizations concerned with women affairs, lawyers and judges from several courts, parliamentarians, student and professors from universities and representatives of both Christian and Muslim religion discussed the most important problems that women still face in obtaining their rights to become equal to men.

The participants shared experiences and solutions, because most of the civil society organizations that are struggling for women's rights have their own way of reaching their objectives. Different questions were addressed like the conflict between international law and local law on women's rights, or Women's rights in Islam and in Christianity. An important point of discussion was also women's leadership in political participation. The goal of the workshop was to identify the most important strategies that provide profit in the struggle to secure the rights of women and to develop a future plan for action on the ground.
