Within the framework of the 'Building Communities Resiliencies'-project in cooperation with the 'Association for Forests, Development and Conservation - AFDC' in Lebanon (see previous article) two workshops took place in August 2017. The workshops aimed to take a step forward to strengthen and coordinate the committee’s capacity related to resilient communities. The committees are representing Ghazeh and Anjar municipality members, engineers, farmers, forest guards, social workers, principals, teachers, students and civil defence representatives.

During the two-day workshops on " Resilient communities – prevention and preparedness " the Ghazeh and the Anjar committees were introduced to the basic elements to develop a local emergency preparedness plan. The committee members identified the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the external opportunities and threats they are having in their village (SWOT Analysis). Furthermore, they reviewed the stakeholder analysis results and put their comments based on the acquired knowledge on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), which is a systematic approach to identifying, assessing and reducing the risks of disaster.

The next workshops will be on "Resilient Communities: response and early recovery".

AFDC coaches the local committees through regular meetings and guides them through the process of drafting a Municipality Resiliency Plan. The expected result is one final contingency plan per municipality, approved by the municipal council.
