Project Objectives

Within the project framework, there are two levels of intervention: the ‘Policy level’ and the ‘Practical level’

Expected Overall Learning Objective 'Policy level':

The aim of the workshops is to increase the knowledge of decision-makers with regard to climate change and the role of protected areas. Furthermore the workshops will provide the opportunity for exchange in order to foster regional dialogue on this topic.

Specific Learning Objectives 'Policy level':

The target group should increase their knowledge and understanding of the important role of protected areas in the field of climate change mitigation and adaption. In the framework of the workshops different tools and strategies will be presented to integrate protected areas in national climate change policies. The decision-makers will have the opportunity to exchange information on national and possible transnational measures for the protection of protected areas and their role as an effective tool for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Regional recommendations for the integration of protected areas in national climate policies will be jointly elaborated and published.

Expected Overall Learning Objective 'Practical level:

The aim of the workshops is to improve the knowledge and management skills of executives and employees of institutions, that are entrusted with the management of protected areas, in regard to increasing the resilience of protected areas and their role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Specific Learning Objectives 'Practical level':

The target group should get knowledge of possible scenarios, impact and consequences of climate change on protected areas. Within the framework of practical exercises threats for at least 2 protected areas due to climate change will exemplary be identified and Management plans will be reviewed and recommendations for the integration of climate change impacts and for increasing the resilience of protected areas will be developed. In addition exemplary strategies of climate change mitigation and adaption will be designed for selected protected areas. Finally examples of best practices (based on the MENA region) for the management of protected areas to integrate climate change impacts on protected areas and to increase their resilience will be compiled by the participants.
