Fostering Democracy and Intercultural Dialogue through Poetry and Music

On the occasion of the International Music Day on June 21, the International Center for Human Sciences (CISH), in partnership with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, and in collaboration with the Center for the Lebanese Heritage of the Lebanese American University (LAU), organized a round-table event on poetry, Zajal, and music. The event, held on June 16th, 2023 at the CISH premises in Byblos, showcased the power of music and poetry in promoting peace-building and intercultural understanding.

The activity aimed to achieve several important goals, including promoting musical dialogue and poetry as effective tools for peacebuilding and democracy. It also sought to enhance social cohesion among Lebanese youth through music, empower young people for active participation and collaboration through poems and musical exchanges.

Renowned keynote speakers, poets, and musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds and countries contributed to the success of the event, creating a rich tapestry of perspectives and experiences.

During the event, the participants actively engaged in round-table discussions and benefited from informative lectures delivered by researchers and experts in the field. The feedback obtained from participants and speakers confirmed the achievement of the activity's objectives. The diverse representation and international presence were particularly appreciated, fostering democracy and intercultural dialogue through poetry and music.

One notable highlight of the event was the participation of grade four students from Champville, who delighted the audience with their Zajal performances. This engaging interaction showcased the enthusiasm and involvement of individuals of all ages in intercultural dialogue, peacebuilding, and women's empowerment.
