In 2017 the 'Association for Forests, Development and Conservation - AFDC' and the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung implement a project which aims at building the capacities of local communities in general and municipalities in specific on the concept of “Resiliency”, one of the main approaches used worldwide by communities to reduce the impact of natural and manmade risks and hazards (see previous article).

In 2017 the municipalities of Anjar / Zahleh Caza and Ghazze / Bekaa Caza are part of the project. The municipalities are selected based on the available UN and Government database on the most vulnerable local communities in Lebanon. As a first step local committees were established for developing the resiliency plans in each community. The local committee members were identified through a local stakeholders’ analysis. The members of the committees have different professional back ground since they are representing main residence such as: the Municipality member, Civil Defence, Red Cross, School Principals and teachers, NGO representatives and other local institutions.

During the one-day workshops on "Introduction to resilient community approach" the Anjar (19.04.2017) and the Ghazze (01.05.2017) committees each met together for the first time. The committees learned about AFDC and HSS project and the resilient communities approach and were introduced to the “Disaster Risk Reduction Unit in Lebanon”.

The workshops aimed to take a step forward to strengthen and coordinate the committee’s capacity related to resilient communities. The participants are aware about different disasters and crisis that can affect their village and they got the knowledge about the idea of building resilience to natural and man-made disasters, and the importance of strategic plans that a community can have to prevent or protect itself from all the possible dangers it may face.
